Rezum

What is Rezum and What Does it Treat?

Rezum is a minimally invasive treatment option for an enlarged prostate (normally referred to as BPH) that minimizes certain unwanted side effects that sometimes accompany more invasive procedures or various medications. Common symptoms of and enlarged prostate include frequency, urgency, decreased stream, straining and excessive nighttime urination. Rezum can clear these symptoms away with no incisions, no general anesthesia, preservation of sexual function, and with a return to regular activities within a few days.

How Does Rezum Work?

The Rezum procedure is done in one of our offices with local anesthesia. During the procedure, water vapor (steam) is injected into the prostate through a cystoscope needle. The hot water vapor’s natural energy causes the destruction some of the prostate tissue. As the steam turns back into water over time, this ablated tissue is reabsorbed by the body’s natural healing response, reducing the volume of prostate tissue surrounding the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside the body). This allows urine to better flow through the prostate and decreased the symptoms of BPH. Your urologist will determine the amount of treatments you need, based on the size of your prostate.

Rezum is a great treatment option for those who have given up on lifestyle changes and watchful waiting, dissatisfied with their BPH medications, or are not interested in other minimally invasive/surgical BPH procedures.
