Robot-Assisted Surgery- The Surgeon Has Complete Control

What are Robotic-Assisted Surgeries Used For?

Several major surgeries are being performed with the use of “robots” in operating rooms. Robotic assisted surgery is not truly a robot in the sense it does not function on its own. Many of our surgeries are performed with the use of small instruments placed through tiny incisions in the patient. These robotic arms are directly controlled by the surgeon from a computer console next to the patient, which adds greater precision, dexterity, control, and range of motion than standard instruments.

How Are the Robots Used in the Surgery?

The robotic instruments require the surgeon’s complete control throughout the entire procedure, and, by utilizing the robot, the doctor can complete the procedure more efficiently with improved vision, more precise fine motor control, and easier access to difficult-to-reach anatomical areas. A specialized robotic telescope allows the surgeon to see the area of operation under 12x magnification and in 3 dimensions, which provides greater visual detail to the surgical are than ever before. Robotic surgery has been shown to result in decreased pain, blood loss, and recovery time.

What Kinds of Surgeries Are Offered in this Format?

Many benign urologic surgeries are performed robotically including prostatectomy both for benign and cancerous conditions, partial and total nephrectomy, pyeloplasty, cystectomy, and others. If you are considering a major urological surgery, robotic-assisted surgery may be an option for you.
